What’s Happening: Installations
Update from Rich Jones
⚠️ Crimewatch – Where the Industry Falls Short
“In every sector, there are leaders and there are followers”
In ours, the difference is visible, painfully visible, in the quality of installations happening across the country.
This month I thought I’d title it Crimewatch Not because it’s about cheap shots. It’s about industry accountability. Because what we’re seeing out there isn’t just poor workmanship; it’s a pattern of corner‑cutting that undermines customer trust and damages the reputation of the entire blinds sector.
Misaligned systems. Under‑spec’d hardware. Installations that ignore basic engineering principles.
These aren’t isolated mistakes; they’re symptoms of an industry where “fit it fast” has replaced “fit it right”.
And that’s exactly why Specialist Blinds stands apart.
Where others compromise.
Where others accept “that’ll do”, we insist on precision, load integrity, product longevity, and professional finish.
Where others rely on luck, we rely on process, expertise, and engineering‑led installation standards.
The examples below aren’t included for drama, they’re included because they highlight a truth the industry rarely says out loud:
quality isn’t common. Leadership is.
And leadership is what we deliver every single day.
These real‑world cases show what happens when companies chase speed over skill, price over performance, and convenience over craftsmanship. They also show why customers come to us when they want the job done properly, and why our standards continue to set the pace for the industry.
Their Way vs Our Way
Their Way
- “Fit it fast” instead of “fit it right”.
- Cheapest components, minimal testing, and no consideration for long‑term performance.
- Installations that look acceptable on day one but fail under real‑world use.
- Corners cut to protect margins, not customers.
- A mindset built around volume, not value.
Our Way
- Engineering‑led installation, not guesswork.
- Components chosen for durability, load integrity, and lifecycle performance.
- Systems fitted with precision, alignment, and finish as non‑negotiables.
- Processes designed to protect the customer, not the bottom line.
- A mindset built around leadership, not shortcuts.
Why This Matters
For years, we’ve highlighted the difference between true craftsmanship and the poor practices we see across the industry, especially from the company beginning with H, whose work appears all over Facebook. Their output makes one thing clear: they don’t prioritise the full customer experience. They prioritise the bottom line.
Our approach is the opposite. And that’s why customers trust us, why our installs last, and why our standards continue to set the benchmark for the industry. Something we should all be proud of.
Real‑World Example: Toddington Services, M1 Southbound
These photos were taken at the coffee bar inside Toddington Services on the M1 in Dunstable. If you’re ever heading south, it’s worth stopping in, grabbing a coffee, and looking at the roof lantern blinds installed there.
Because the installation tells its own story.
The blinds have been fitted using plastic side shelves, which are not designed to carry the load of a roof lantern system. As a result, the installers have had to suspend supporting wires from above just to hold the weight, a workaround that highlights the weakness of the original specification.
When I asked the staff member behind the counter how well the blinds helped with heat and glare, his response was immediate: they’ve never worked properly. One of the blinds at the end no longer moves at all, leaving the space exposed and offering no benefit to the people working beneath it.
This is exactly what happens when products are under‑engineered, under‑specified, and installed without long‑term performance in mind. And it’s exactly why our standards, and our engineering‑led approach matter.

✍️ Final Thoughts
Taking both examples together, highlights in this Crimewatch review point to persistent behavioural patterns within parts of the industry, including inconsistent installation practices, weak customer communication, and limited operational oversight. Unless these underlying behaviours are addressed, similar incidents will continue to surface across the sector. These cases reflect issues specific to the organisations involved, rather than the wider professional landscape. “Us”
🧩 Blind Space Boxes
Blind space boxes are one of those topics that resurface every now and again, in fact, we discussed them at the National Sales Meeting last year. To put them into context, these boxes are very expensive, and the cost can escalate quickly depending on the specification.
Recently, we had a customer absolutely set on having blind space boxes throughout their project. The challenge is that these boxes come in multiple sizes, and the correct size depends entirely on what product is being installed inside them.
For simplicity:
- Roller blinds now follow the industry standard 135mm x 135mm box size. This applies to all rollers, including heavy‑duty versions. They require a 20mm open slot for the weighted bottom rail to pass through.
- Cellular blinds are different. Here, the stack height must be specified accurately, as it determines the required box depth.
- Bauhaus Aspect blinds require even more precision. These projects must be managed differently, with exact measurements and careful coordination to ensure the system performs as designed.
To illustrate the scale: we recently quoted a customer who wanted over 50 square metres of blinds, a mix of rollers and Bauhaus Aspect blinds, all housed within blind space boxes. The boxes alone cost the customer over £12,000, not inc. fitting by their builder, Anything larger than the standard 135mm x 135mm size is classed as a special‑made box, which carries an additional premium.
Blind space boxes can be a fantastic solution, but they must be specified correctly, engineered precisely, and budgeted realistically. Here’s a few photos of a project we’ve helped manage which has ultimately helped us cement the order.

We’ll give you a further update once the project ends later in the year.

Large-Scale Gable Window Shading in Woodmancote
This is an excellent example of where we excel!
Arnaud visited this property in Woodmancote, West Sussex, to look at 2 very large gable end windows, which give the property stunning views of the Devil’s Dyke in West Sussex.
It seems almost a crime to hide the view, but with glazing this large, shading is essential to make the living area comfortable.
With the gables measuring over 4.7m, they are too big for even our Bauhaus Aspect Gables, but that doesn’t stop us from providing a solution! With our Benthin Vertical Gable blinds available up to 5m wide, we were able to provide a versatile shading solution. Pairing black hardware with Hampton Boathouse fabric, the blinds seamlessly fit the window recess and surrounding decor.
As is quite often the norm, these types of windows are invariably a long way from the ground, so Rob Scott did his best mountain climber impression and scaled a tower scaffold to reach the apex so that he could carry out the installation, observing correct safety requirements.
Well done for delivering a quality installation.

From Man Cave to Daughter’s Sanctuary
What does one do when your daughter needs her own living space? You sacrifice your man cave office adorned with motorbikes (yes motorbikes), so your princess can have what she wants. Oh, and you spend over £20k on blinds to give her privacy!
This is a real window into how the wealthy live!
A previously fully refurbished farmhouse and outbuildings on the outskirts of Milton Green, Cheshire, with stunning landscaped gardens needs another update to meet with the demands of the family living there and they contacted us for a quote.
Paul Herrington visited to look at the property, which involves a gym and man cave being converted into a bedroom and lounge. Each area has wide bifolds and glazed gable partitions between the rooms, so Paul has specified Duette Fulltone Slate fabric with Anthracite hardware to match the window frames and provide privacy. Pure 10 12v motors with the Pure Power 15 handset will give the client complete flexibility of control across the wide expanse of glazing. Survey is booked for the 1st June, so watch this space for updates.
Just in case you were worrying where the bikes were going, Paul has advised there is plenty of garage space alongside the racing cars the client also owns!

What’s Happening: Factory
Installation of Our New 5m Powder Coating Oven
We are very pleased to show off our newly installed 5m powder coating oven. This has been a much needed bit of kit for a while now so we are beyond excited to finally have it installed.
Progress was swift at the beginning and the team had it dismantled in just a few hours. Obviously, this installation meant some down time in the powder coating department and we wanted to be back up and running as soon as possible.
Tom and members of the factory staff helped with the unloading of the lorry as well as manoeuvring some of the larger components through the middle of the factory to speed up the process.
As always, this installation didn’t come without its problems. We had to hire a specialist team to specify and install our flue, which meant coordinating 3 different trades to all be on site at the same time. Not something we want to be repeating any time soon, but it was all worth it to have these excellent new facilities at our disposal.

New Additions to the SuperCell FABRIC Range
This month, we launched two new colours within the SuperCell Pumice Range, with more additions planned to follow.
In response to growing customer demand for contemporary darker finishes, we have introduced:
- Pumice 11008 – Onyx Black
- Pumice 11009 – Welsh Slate
Both new shades are also available in matching Dim-Out options.
These latest additions further expand the versatility of the SuperCell collection and provide greater choice for modern interior schemes.
We’re excited to share that a further eight new colours will be launching soon!
We’re Launching a new Roller Fabric Range
A new roller fabric range will shortly be added to the Specialist Blinds Premium Collection in six new exciting colours!
What’s Happening: Marketing
Record-breaking number of enquiries
It’s been extremely busy in the office this week! Record-breaking May temperatures have resulted in a record-breaking number of enquiries this week, which is great news. We’ve beaten the previous records set during the mini heatwaves in July 2022 and June 2023.
As always, it seems that customers need a heatwave to remind them that they need blinds! We’ve seen many more Google searches for blinds and our social media followers are now engaging more with our ads too.
First Social Media Influencer: @thehomeofjade
As previously mentioned, we have recently started working with our first social media influencer/ content creator. Dan fitted her blinds earlier this week, and here’s the result…
Jade will be creating more content for us over the coming months, showing how the blinds shade and add privacy to her home. Jade has 188k followers, including many home renovators, so this will be excellent PR for us. Her videos will also be reshared across our own socials, paid ads and website.
Professional Video/Photoshoot
We’ve recently enlisted the help of a new videographer Chris to cover installs further south. He has just visited the family home of the founders of Babycham, where Rob S installed 24 motorised English pinoleum roof blinds. This stunning property overlooks the Solent and the Isle of Wight. We’ll be creating videos and posting clips across the website and socials in the coming weeks, but here’s a sneaky preview…

Supporting local fundraisers
We were contacted by Great Chart Primary School in Ashford who are just down the road from the factory, asking us to help sponsor a stall at their forthcoming fundraising event. They are raising funds to allow them to invite external visitors/speakers into the school, enhancing the curriculum and providing pupils with a more diverse and engaging learning experience.
So, if any locals fancy a game of ‘play your cards right’, head down to their Summer Fete on Saturday 20th June.

MAY Reviews Showcase
We’ve received some fantastic reviews this month, and we wanted to share a few standouts:
Very professional and polite service.
⭐5/5 Trustpilot™ – (Arnaud Keat & Ryan Keegan)
Arnaud came to our house to make the initial contact and to talk through the options available. He had a very pleasant manner and ensured we were in agreement with the proposed installation.
The next visit was made by Ryan who measured the required dimensions for the five new blinds. He kept us updated with his expected arrival time. When he returned to fit the blinds he insisted on replacing the existing window blind attachments for the three pre existing units as he felt they were not as secure as they could be. He completed the work on schedule and cleaned up afterwards. Full instructions were given on how to operate the remote control.
Ryan is very polite and professional. He encouraged questions and communicated clearly when discussing the work.
This was the second time Specialist Blinds have installed window blinds and we would thoroughly recommend them – Tim Raemason
Quality care, understanding, explanations.
⭐10/10 Checkatrade™ – (Paul Herrington & Dan Watson)
We have had installed motorised blinds on our pitched conservatory roof 6 months ago. The blinds are a quality product working efficiently and pleasing to behold. The visiting Agent took our order after thoroughly explaining everything to clearly, calmly and precisely. The fitter took great care installing the blinds conferring with us to ensure our requirements were being met. No mess was left behind. This is a product that can be very highly recommended. – Bazza Feldman
Great service & well made innovative blinds
⭐5/5 Trustpilot™ – (Arnaud Keat & Ryan Keegan)
Great service all round, from my first online enquiry, the initial visit by Arnaud to give a quotation and see samples, the survey visit by Ryan, and the blind fitting by Ryan. Specialist Blinds is a very professional company with knowledgeable staff and great products. An additional bonus is that the blinds are made in Kent 🙂 – Debbie West
Customer Email – (Andy Robinson)
Hi everyone at specialist blinds.
Andy Robinson came and fitted my conservatory roof blinds on 12/05/2026.
I have to say Andy and the job was first class.
A great representative to your company.

Paul Partridge

Competitor Watch
Standards on Display… or Not?
As you saw from our WhatsApp message earlier this month, Cheryl visited a surprisingly quiet Grand Designs Show at London Excel and took a particular interest in the Appeal Shading stand.
Not so discreetly, she snapped a few photos of their small — but very bright — gable blind to show us what our competitor considers acceptable enough to display at an exhibition stand.
Perhaps the rather questionable fabric colour choice was intended to distract visitors from the very noticeable gap at the top… We’ll let the photos speak for themselves….

We’ve also noticed that Appeal exhibited at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show last weekend, again proudly displaying their bright yellow gappy gable blind.

Factory Employee of the Month
Our employee of the month for May is
Kerry Hollingsbee 🥳🥇
Kerry is one of our newer employees having only joined the company back in February. She has really taken to her work in the fabric department, quickly becoming a valued member of the team. She also excels in communicating well with other departments which is something we really value. Kerry was employed as maternity cover but we are pleased to say she’s here to stay as she has been moved to a permanent contract – we wouldn’t be without her now – Ellie Smith-Anderson
AND FINALLY…
a Decade of Service and Customer Loyalty
This month, we’re highlighting a special project that reflects both our company’s longevity and our commitment to customer care. One of our longstanding clients, who originally had manual roof and side blinds installed ten years ago, is now updating her system to a motorised version.
The initial blinds were sold by Arnaud and installed by Ryan at the time. Recently, the same client reached out to reorder her entire setup, choosing to upgrade to motorised blinds to make her daily routine easier. Her husband has recently passed away, and she has expressed difficulty operating the manual roof blinds by pole.
Arnaud went out to consult, and Ryan is now installing the new motorised blinds, bringing the project full circle.
It’s a poignant reminder that, despite the many changes over the years, our team’s dedication and consistency remain strong. Not many blind companies can boast about having the same staff for over ten / twenty years, which makes this story even more meaningful.
Many customers are pleasantly surprised to hear that the same team will be dealing with their new project, so this project, and many others like it, exemplifies our ongoing commitment to building lasting relationships with our clients and adapting to their evolving needs. Well done to everyone involved in making this happen!
